Edge Magazine Preview: What a 90-Minute Hands-Off Demo Revealed

Edge writer Simon Parkin sat in on roughly 90 minutes of the current build while Rockstar’s Rob Nelson played. Parkin did not touch the controller, but the session gave a useful look at how the systems behave together. Instead of following a scripted mission, Nelson simply wandered through the world.

A Busy First Three Minutes

The demo opens in the apartment Jason and Lucia share, though it is unclear which one. Nelson drinks a coffee for a stamina boost and a protein shake for health, then heads outside. In just a few minutes, a lot happens:

  • A seagull wanders over to some scraps and flies off.
  • Jason stares at a man walking his dog. The man gets angry, steps up to Jason and lets the dog off its leash, so the animal chases the player.
  • Two officers are busy making an arrest nearby. Nelson walks to their unattended patrol car, opens the trunk and takes out a shotgun.

That last point lines up with earlier reports that police cars can be looted. It is not known whether every patrol vehicle carries a weapon. If you want to know what you can carry once you have one, see GTA 6 Confirmed Weapons.

Pedestrians React to You, Not a Script

Edge describes how the people around you respond based on where they are, what they have seen and what you have done. Rockstar reportedly tunes how many people in an area might get aggressive, pull a weapon or challenge you. How you hold a gun matters too, since carrying it on your back looks different from holding it in your hands.

Not every incident instantly triggers a wanted level, either. According to the preview, you sometimes get a window to put the weapon away before things escalate.

Street Races, Strange Houses and Police Dogs

Other moments from the demo stand out:

  • While Nelson drove an old station wagon, a group in a modified 4x4 harassed him at a traffic light. He eventually gave in to the taunts and started a street race.
  • Another Rockstar staffer, Aaron Garbett, walked into a house he had never seen before. He found family photos and a dog that had wrecked the interior. Jason visibly reacted to the smell, which suggests the game has contextual animations for many situations.
  • During a motorcycle escape, Jason and Lucia hit spike strips, were thrown off the bike and limped away. The article does not confirm a full injury system, so treat this as an interesting hint rather than a promise.
  • After a crash, a police canine unit joined the chase and pinned Jason down.

Between the civilian with a dog and the police K-9, animals clearly play a bigger role this time.

World, Weather and Time

The preview gives more detail on the setting:

  • Map size: Edge says Leonida is roughly twice as large as the GTA 5 map. Rockstar’s land area is said to be close to the combined playable space of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Early exploration: The map reportedly opens up fairly early, so you can head north without clearing a long chain of story missions. The exact point is not specified.
  • Longer days and nights: GTA 5’s timing felt too quick in a world this detailed, so Rockstar stretched sunsets and nights.
  • Living weather: Storms roll in from a distance, roads get wet, buildings drip afterward and surfaces dry at different speeds. Wind affects the water, with sheltered coasts calmer than exposed ones. Storms can push aircraft around, severe weather can lightly damage vehicles, and pedestrians run for cover.

Money, Cars and Relationships

Several systems tied to progression also came up again:

  • Early cash is tight. Jason and Lucia need money to push the story forward, and you can raise it through robberies of places like gas stations and jewelry stores, or by stealing cars. Pacing may feel slower or faster depending on how quickly you earn.
  • Car theft has consequences. Some drivers panic and flee while others fight back. Stolen vehicles may be tracked, and fences use signal blockers to make a handover safe.
  • Vehicle delivery. The Scooter Bros app brings your car to you for a small fee. Larger guns come from your trunk or an ammo locker, while handguns and small items stay on you.
  • Fuel and engine health. Every vehicle has both gauges, but Rockstar says refuelling is a quick stop, so it should not drag down the pace.
  • Relationship meter. Nelson said the pair start out wanting to give their relationship another shot, and their closeness runs on a four-step scale. Beach walks, cycling, driving and gym visits can raise it, and it will shape the ending. Marriage was neither confirmed nor ruled out.
  • Criminal profile. This system runs from professional to irredeemable, reflects your choices and also affects the ending.

12 New Screenshots

Rockstar released a new batch alongside the Edge piece. Highlights include Jason with a cut lip in front of an explosion, Lucia lifting her sunglasses in a neon club, a hammerhead shark over a reef, an airboat in wetlands, a motorcycle meet-up, a small-town biker ride, and Jason and Lucia on a bike with a handgun. There is also a waterfront skyline with a Ferris wheel and a gang gathering that may involve a biker group. Whether any of those scenes matter to the plot is unknown.

A South Park Cameo

An episode of South Park included real GTA 6 footage. A clip showed a dog relieving itself on a beach, with the narrator joking that you can pick up the mess and throw it at someone. Rockstar is thanked in the credits, which confirms the footage is genuine. The narrator was also voiced by Tish Hicks, who narrated GTA 5’s gameplay videos back in 2013.
